Practice
Emma Brown specialises in international criminal law and international humanitarian law. She advises and lectures on a range of issues including:
  • International criminal justice, current developments in international humanitarian law and international peace and security
  • The symbiotic relationship between peace, justice and reconciliation
  • The conduct of war crimes trials
  • Conduct of hostilities and compliance with international humanitarian law
  • Post-conflict judicial reconstruction and the role it plays in peace building
  • Middle East relations with a particular focus on Israel, the Occupied Territories and Lebanon
She holds a BA in Modern Languages from Westminster University and an MA in international peace and security studies from King’s College London. She is a member of the Royal Institute for International Affairs. Emma was called to the Bar by Middle Temple in 2002 where she was a Harmsworth scholar.

She speaks Arabic and Spanish.

She is regularly instructed by both human rights charities and armed forces to provide advice on current developments on the law of armed conflict and the conduct of hostilities.

Her recent work includes deployment with NATO Armed Forces during operational exercises to provide a real time civilian reaction to operational decisions concerning the conduct of hostilities and international criminal law; and lecturing on matters of operational law at military law conferences.

She is on the approved list of defence counsel for the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.

She has previously worked in both Israel and the Occupied Territories on behalf of various international law charities and assisted in the drafting of legislation for the Palestinian Authority.
