David Wurtzel practised at the Bar full-time from January 1976 to January 2003. He worked initially from 3 Dr Johnson's Buildings, which later became 2 Dr Johnson's Buildings / Dr Johnson's Chambers, and then again Charter Chambers (under the leadership of Stephen Solley QC). His practice has always been taken up largely with crime in the Greater London area, mainly prosecuting, but also including some family and personal injury work.
He prosecuted often for the Crown Prosecution Service, earlier at Wood Green, Kingston, Isleworth and Oxford, latterly most often at Woolwich, Snaresbrook and Croydon. He is now a door tenant at 18 Red Lion Court, taking occasional instructions in minor criminal matters.
His main work is as a Consultant to the Continuing Professional Development Department at the Inns of Court School of Law (ICSL). He has worked at the ICSL since February 2004. His responsibilities include advocacy training, for example:
- for the South African Legal Aid Board in 2004 and again in 2005
- for the Association of Women Solicitors' Returners' Course
- for visiting Dutch and Polish lawyers and
- for the Middle Temple Advocacy Department
He has also taught
- witness handling and advocacy for the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys
- legal issues for tax accountants and
- legal training for intermediaries on behalf of the Home Office.
He has written the material for the Judicial Studies Board intranet on money laundering and the confiscation of assets under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. He has also devised distance learning courses for solicitors and barristers on POCA
