Charity Support

18 Red Lion Court believes strongly that its success carries a duty to give back to the wider legal community both in the UK and internationally.

Together with Matrix Chambers, we sponsor the British Institute of Human Rights, in order to support its influential work in embedding human rights in British culture, particularly in the provision of social welfare and health care. We also provide sponsorship to the Centre for Capital Punishment Studies, based at the University of Westminster, helping to fund the appointment of research interns.

Several members have undertaken international pro bono work. Trevor Archer has worked for Public Defenders in the US on death row cases. Louis-Peter Moll and Michelle Nelson have undertaken internships working on capital cases in the Caribbean. Alex Milne QC has represented Amnesty International at foreign trials and inquests. Noel Casey advised and provided training during the establishment of a new judicial system in Afghanistan.

Peter Carter QC is a former Chair, and continuing member, of the Bar Human Rights Committee. John Lyons is a former Chair of Liberty, a trustee of the Civil Liberties Trust and the UK representative of the International Federation of Human Rights. Prof. David Ormerod sits on the Executive Counsel of Liberty.

18 Red Lion Court has for several years run a competitive annual award for an advocate from an African common law jurisdiction to visit and observe the English criminal justice system - see separate page.
