Plea in first home-grown cricket trial
19.02.2012
Nigel Peters QC was a prosecutor in a case where the defendant, a former Essex county cricketer, admitted accepting or obtaining a corrupt payment in order to assist in a spot-betting scam during a match on 5th September 2009. Mervyn Westfield pleaded guilty to agreeing allowing the Durham team to score a set number of runs during an over in return for a £6,000 payment. He is the first English cricketer to be prosecuted for spot-fixing.
